JJ PAULO
JJ Paulo has firmly established himself as one of the most energetic and forward-thinking artists on the Danish music scene. With roots in Tanzania and feet planted solidly in Danish soil, he bridges melodic pop with pulsing African rhythms that go straight to the body and make it impossible to stand still. The genre is called Afrobeat, and today JJ Paulo stands as one of its most distinctive voices in Scandinavia.
2023 became a breakthrough year: at the Danish Music Awards Roots he was honored with the award for Live Concert of the Year, a recognition of the explosive energy he brings to the stage and the cultural horizon he expands for his audiences. That same year he played more than 75 concerts across Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, Tanzania, the UK and Iceland, and concluded with a 16-city nationwide tour in Denmark which culminated in a sold-out Store VEGA. All without a manager or a record label behind him.
Since the release of his 2022 EP JORAM, JJ Paulo has been touring widely and sharing his culture with audiences around the world. He has performed on prominent platforms such as MTV Africa, KEXP, Eurosonic Festival, Roskilde Festival, Smukfest and many more. BBC Radio’s Raffaella Coleman put it best:
“JJ, you are an absolute star - and when you blow up, do not forget about us.”
2024 added another wild chapter to the Paulo story: he played 43 festivals at home and abroad, with a highlight performance as headliner at the French Europavox Festival. The year concluded with a Danish Music Award nomination for New Live Artist of the Year, and 2025 opened with his largest show to date at a packed Den Grå Hal.
In January 2026, JJ Paulo received Den Unge Kunstneriske Elite from The Danish Arts Foundation, the highest artistic recognition one can receive as a young artist in Denmark. The award clearly signals how strongly his international potential is perceived.
And the cultural bridge is now being built in real time: at Danmarks Indsamlingen 2026, one of the most watched TV events in the country - Paulo appears both as co-host and live performer. A platform that not only allows him to represent Afro-Danish voices, but also to introduce a broader audience to the cultural heritage his music rises from.
2026 also marks the year Paulo intensifies his international work, with concerts planned across Europe, Africa and North America, and a new EP serving as a prelude to his long-awaited debut album, scheduled for release in 2027.
With new music, global touring and a rapidly growing audience, JJ Paulo is in the process of fulfilling his stated ambition:
“To build bridges between cultures and break down silos - by being everywhere, globally.”
Afrobeat is in the midst of a global rise, and JJ Paulo stands ready to be one of the genre’s defining voices, from Tanzania to the rest of the world.
